Zambezi Rafting History
Rafting on the Zambezi began during the early 1980s, when adrenaline junkies discovered the wild potential of the river below Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. What started as a daring expedition quickly became one of Africa’s most popular adventure sports.
Today, the Batoka Gorge section of the Zambezi is renowned worldwide, and consistently ranked in the Top 10 white-water destinations. Boasting over 20 rapids, many of which are Grade IV and V, meaning they’re intense, challenging, and absolutely thrilling. You’re not just paddling, you’re entering the hall of fame of rafting legends.
Why Low Water Zambezi Rafting Season is a Big Deal
Low water rafting typically runs roughly from August till January, when the Zambezi water levels drop to reveal its most technical and dramatic rapids. The lower the water, the more exposed the rocks, the bigger the drops, and the wilder the ride. This is peak rafting season and an absolute bucket-list item for adrenaline lovers.
Each rapid has its own personality, from chaotic whirlpools to towering waves that will leave you breathless.
What are the names of the Zambezi River Rapids
#1: The Wall
#2: Between Two Worlds
#4: Morning Glory
#5: Stairway to Heaven
#6: The Devil’s Toilet Bowl
#7: Gulliver’s Travels
Despite the name, this one’s usually a smooth wave train.
#8: The Midnight Diner
#9: Commercial Suicide
#10: The Gnashing Jaws of Death
Despite the name, this one’s usually a smooth wave train.
#11: Overland Truck Eater
Also known, affectionately, as Creamy White Buttocks, this rapid goes from boiling drop to perfect surfer wave depending on river levels. Rafters love it. Overland trucks, not so much.
#12A, B & C: The Three Ugly Sisters
Three rapids in a row that don’t give you time to breathe. A kilometre of near continuous action.
#13: The Mother
The Zambezi’s most famous wave train. The first and fourth waves pack a punch, this is where laughs, flips, and adrenaline soar. A true highlight after the sisters have softened you up.
#15: The Washing Machine
This one’s for the spin cycle. At low water, a recirculating pour over forms dead centre. Be nice to your guide and they may choose to dodge right and keep you staying dryish.
#16A & 16B: Terminator I & II
At high water, these combine into a juggernaut of a wave train. Terminator 2, 16B, is infamous for flipping rafts left and right. At low water, though, it’s your friendly neighbourhood rapid.
#17: Double Trouble
Two big holes in the middle. Easy enough at high flows, but when the water drops, you’ll get to enjoy a few surprises.
#18: Oblivion
The Zambezi River’s most iconic rapid, and for good reason. Huge crashing holes, guaranteed chaos, and a legendary reputation for flipping rafts and rattling nerves. Biggest, and baddest to end your adventure!
Hear from some of our Guests
“I’ve been chasing adrenaline during my solo travels across Southern Africa, but nothing was quite like rafting down the Zambezi. The rapids were absolutely wild in the best way! Jollyboys sorted everything from start to finish, and the guides were hilarious and total pros. I’d do it again tomorrow! 10/10 bucket list material.” Jamie, USA
“I was nervous at first as I’d never done rafting before but the reception team at Jollyboys made it so easy to organise and helped me feel very prepared. By the second rapid, I was filled with excitement rather than far. It was a great way to meet other travellers as well and the free sunset cruise afterwards just made the whole experience!” Megan, UK
