September 22nd marks World Rhino Day, a global moment of reflection, hope, and action for one of Earth’s most endangered species. Here in Livingstone, Zambia, we’re lucky to be just minutes away from a powerful conservation story, one that unfolds daily in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, where Zambia’s only white rhinos roam.
At Jollyboys Backpackers, we believe travel should do good. That’s why we’re proud to support and promote the amazing efforts taking place right here in our backyard to protect these magnificent animals.
The Rhinos of Mosi-oa-Tunya
Zambia once teemed with rhinos, but by the early 1990s, poaching had wiped them out. Thanks to conservation heroes, white rhinos were reintroduced to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, and today, a small but thriving population lives under the watchful care of rangers and scouts.
These rhinos are a beacon of hope, proof that with determination and teamwork, we can turn the tide on extinction.
Walk Among Rhinos: An Unforgettable Safari Experience
One of the most unique experiences in Africa is just a short trip from Jollyboys: a walking safari to see rhinos in the wild. Guided by expert rangers and anti-poaching scouts, you’ll track rhinos on foot through the bush: no vehicles, no fences, just you and nature.
It’s a peaceful, humbling, and heart-racing experience all at once. And it’s one of the few places in the world where you can get this close to a wild rhino in a natural and ethical setting.
Want to go? We can book it for you in advance or as you arrive at Jollyboys reception. It’s one of our most recommended activities, and not just because it’s unforgettable. Your visit directly supports the people and programs protecting these animals every day.

Conservation Across Zambia
Beyond Mosi-oa-Tunya, Zambia is home to an ambitious black rhino reintroduction project in North Luangwa National Park, one of the most remote and protected ecosystems in the country. Together, Zambia’s conservation areas are working to secure a future for both black and white rhinos.
Organisations like the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and the Frankfurt Zoological Society are leading the charge with anti-poaching patrols, community education, and long-term habitat protection.
