Kayaking Season is Upon Us, and Jollyboys is the Place to Be!

Hold onto your paddles, folks, kayaking season is officially upon us! If you’ve been dreaming of paddling your way down the mighty Zambezi River, carving through the rapids like a pro (or at least looking like one), then Livingstone is calling your name.

And let’s be honest, there’s no better place to stay while white water kayaking on the Zambezi River than at Jollyboys Backpackers, the undisputed hub for all things kayaking in Livingstone. So, whether you’re a seasoned kayaker or just someone looking to have a blast on the river, we’ve got everything you need to make your adventure unforgettable. Spoiler alert: There might be some rafting fun for non-kayakers, too!

The Zambezi: A Kayaker’s Dream (Or Nightmare… But Mostly Dream)

Imagine this: You’re in your kayak, the world falls away, and you’re gliding over the Zambezi’s wild, churning waters. The rapids roar, your heart races, and you think, “I was made for this!” Or maybe you scream, “Why did I think this was a good idea?!” either way, it’s an experience you won’t forget.

The Zambezi is a bucket-list destination for kayakers, with world-class rapids that range from thrilling Class III to wild, heart-pounding Class V, meaning it doesn’t matter if you’re a newbie or a veteran, you’ll find something to make your adrenaline levels reach new heights. And if you haven’t done the Zambezi before? Don’t worry! There’s no better time to try, Jollyboys Backpackers can arrange for a guide to accompany you, so grab your paddle, and let the Zambezi show you what it’s got.

When is the best time to Kayak the Zambezi?

The Zambezi River offers thrilling kayaking experiences year-round, but the best time to paddle largely depends on the kind of adventure you’re seeking. The most popular time for our kayaking thrill-seekers is from October (it’s HOT) through mid January though some stay later for bigger volumes of water.. Keep in mind that the rains typically start in early November. For those looking for calmer waters and easier conditions, the dry season, particularly from late August to late October,, is ideal, as the water levels are lower, providing more manageable rapids and clearer views.

Jollyboys Backpackers: Your Kayaking Headquarters in Livingstone

If you’re coming to Livingstone to tackle the Zambezi, you want to discover Jollyboys Backpackers, the heart of the kayaking community in Livingstone. Why? Apart from the great vibes, the pool is always welcoming after a day on the river, and the beer is icy cold, Jollyboys Backpackers is set up for kayakers. Check out why Jollies is ideal:

  • Specialized Storage for Kayaks: Jollyboys dedicated storage for your kayak. Leave it in good hands while you go out and explore the rest of Livingstone (or hit the pool; we won’t judge).
  • Transfers to and from the River: Getting to the river with your kayak can be a hassle, but not at Jollyboys. They’ve got you covered as they can point you in the right direction for transfers to and from the Zambezi, so you can focus on your paddle strokes, not your transportation logistics.
  • Kayak Kit Rental: Couldn’t you bring your own kit, or do you need a last-minute replacement for that piece of gear you forgot to pack? No problem! Our activities team can organise your kayaking kit rental, so you’re all set to hit the water. Whether it’s a paddle, helmet, or boats, we’ve got it all covered. Just remember that gear is limited, so it is best to contact Jollies in advance.
  • Community Vibes: At Jollyboys, you’ll meet a bunch of like-minded adventurers, many of whom are hardcore kayakers who will share their tips, tricks, and the occasional horror story. It’s the perfect place to connect with others, trade stories about the rapids, and maybe even find your next paddling partner.

Not a White Water Kayaker? No Problem; Try Rafting!

Okay, okay, so maybe you’re reading this and thinking, “Kayaking sounds cool, but I’m more of a ‘sit back and let someone else do the crazy stuff’ kind of person.” No judgment! The Zambezi River has something for everyone, and there are plenty of activities, though rafting is the best way to experience its wild rapids if you’re not ready to paddle solo!

Hop in a raft with one of our expert guides and hold on tight as you barrel through some of the most intense rapids on the planet. Trust us, you’ll get the thrill of the Zambezi without the responsibility of steering yourself (thank goodness). It’s the perfect balance of adrenaline and fun, especially for those who want the ride of their life but prefer not to get too personal with the water (you know, in the way that a kayak *might* make you do).

Why Jollyboys is the Go-To Place for Every Zambezi Adventure

Aside from being the best place to crash after a day of thrilling water adventures, Jollyboys Backpackers is an integral part of Livingstone’s kayaking (and rafting) scene and has been for years. Whether you’re an experienced white water kayaker looking for a place to store your gear or a newbie eager to jump into the Zambezi rapids, Jollyboys has everything you need to make your stay as smooth as possible. They’ll help you organise your trips, book your adventures, and even make sure you’re well-fed and rested after a day on the water.
